Plastic Number Five

Resin code number five is polypropylene.  You may know it by the abbreviation PP.  Polypropylene is used for yogurt cups, medicine bottles, ketchup bottles, kitchenware, dishware, food containers, auto parts, and some plastic bags.

Polypropylene is a thermoplastic that is made from the monomer propylene.  It was first produced in the early 1950s.  Today polypropylene is the second most widely produced plastic after polyethylene.

Polypropylene is used in kitchen and food applications because of its high heat and oil resistance.  It also serves as an excellent moisture barrier.  Polypropylene is advertised as being "microwave safe" for these reasons.  Microwave safe means that the plastic is heat resistant and will hold up under normal microwave usage.  Microwave safe does not mean that it is safe to consume food that has been heated in this plastic.

Due to its high heat and oil resistant properties, polypropylene is considered a safer plastic to use.  It is thought to be a plastic that is less likely to leach chemicals.  However, at least one study found that polypropylene leached at least two different chemicals.

Polypropylene is accepted by most curbside recycling programs.  It can be downcycled into other products, including industrial fibers.

Previous studies have found that 95 percent of all plastic tested is positive for estrogenic activity, so consider that when using this plastic, as well as all plastic.  Make sure to recycle plastic that you use and try to reduce the amount of plastic that you buy and use in the first place.
