Dear Betty: Reader Suggestion 4/5/2019 (Oat Milk Part II)

Last month I had a suggestion from a reader about making oat milk.  I said that I would give oat milking making oat milk a try and today's post is the follow-up!  You can read the original post here.

I used the recipe from Minimalist Baker as a guide in my first attempt.  I adjusted the recipe to create what I thought I might like.  I'm accustomed to using almond milk for my cereal each morning and as my coffee creamer each day, so I didn't want anything too sweet and I wanted to keep calories low.
Here is the modified recipe that I used:
1 cup rolled oats
4 cups of water
1 pinch of salt
1/2 tsp maple syrup
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

I blended it for one minute as the recipe dictates and then strained it through a cloth.

Ingredients.

The strain.

Oat water milk.

Overall, the first attempt went pretty well.  I learned that the cloth I used was much too thick and I swapped it out for a different one but between the two, I soaked up a fair amount of the milk.  You should get about 4 cups total and I had about 2 and a half cups.  I will continue to make this but in the future, I'll look for the ingredients in bulk instead of what I have in the picture.  It really only makes sense to me if it's done in bulk and in better packaging than what the almond milk was in.  I like that it will save a couple of cartons a month in almond milk and it is cheaper to make.

As far as taste, it's just okay for me.  I think it's comparable to almond milk, so if you are already used to that sort of flavor, this would be an easy switch.  If you love milk, real milk from a cow, you probably are not going to be able to palate oat milk.

Deep thoughts:  I'm not sure why they call this "milk."  Milk comes from mammals and oats, almonds, and cashews are not mammals.  It's really more like opaque flavored water, but whatever.  You could water just about anything down and call it "milk."  Seems like an idea I could use for Satirical Saturday...We'll see.

Thanks, Julie for the suggestion and tips!

Update: On my second attempt at making oat milk, I think I really perfected the process.  I use the cloth in the picture but I wet it before I strain the milk.  I've grown to really enjoy the flavor and bought more of the ingredients in bulk.
