How Many Gallons do you NEED?

We moved into our home back in 2012.  I signed up for the standard size trash can and didn't give it much thought until last year.  Since we often have no trash or a single bag, I decided it was time to switch to a smaller bin.  I didn't even know what size options there are in municipal trash cans.

I was told that our "standard" size can is 96 gallons.  How is the standard 96 gallons?  If you fill that standard 96 gallon can each week, in one year that is 4,992 gallons of trash you are producing!  That's nuts.  I can't hardly remember a time in which we filled that 96 gallons but I know that there must have been a time in which we did.  Our normal amount used to be half or three-quarters full.  Still a substantial amount of trash per week if you really stop and think about it.

The second option is a 64 gallon can.  It's is better than 96 gallons but still quite large.   If you filled your 64 gallon can each week for one year, that would total 3,328 gallons of trash.

The third option for our service is the 32 gallon can.  I wish they had a smaller option but it isn't like you have to fill it.  Smaller would be nice because they are such an eyesore.  If you fill this smaller can each week for a year, you are looking at 1,664 gallons of trash.

I think the goal in every household should be to produce less trash.  It's easy to make changes that become the norm.  It's also nice to be making a difference.  Give some thought to being the first person on your block or cul-de-sac to get the smallest size trash can.  You know you want to be a badass trendsetter.
