I prefer to pack my lunches for work and school in reusable containers. Sometimes my son requires a lunch that can be thrown away or has to be in a very small bag for a field trip and in those cases, reusable containers just are not going to work. Instead of caving in and using a ziplock bag, I discovered wax paper bags.
Wax paper sandwich bags by Reynolds are a great option when you can't utilize reusable containers. The bags can be closed with a small binder clip or with a sticker that comes with it in the box. Frank (not his real name) enjoys picking out which sticker he wants when we are packing his field trip lunches. The bags can be reused and composted at the end of their life. The box I bought at Target was $3.99 and comes with 50 bags and stickers. I'm guessing this box will last us a few years.
At roughly 8 cents per bag, they are significantly more expensive than their plastic counterpart. Less waste and zero waste are often money savers, and this is still true if you normally use reusable containers for lunches, these bags will cost you more than plastic but the benefit of being healthier for you and better for the planet is money well spent.
Invest in reusable containers and opt for wax paper bags when reusables are not an option.
