Life Without Plastic is a book by Canadian married couple Jay Sinha and Chantal Plamondon. This book is very informative but a very slow read. It explains how each kind of plastic is made, what it is made from, what it is used for, and if and how it can be recycled. Once you understand all things plastic on a molecular level, Jay and Chantal take it a couple of steps further. They explain the impact on the environment from the production of plastic all the way to the far-reaching ramifications of these products, hundreds of years from now. They explain not only that plastic is bad for you but more importantly, why plastic is bad for you. They offer endless ideas for non-plastic options and how to make these changes over time.
As I said, this book is very informative. I don’t think the average person would have the drive to finish this book. I had to really force myself to get through the first half, the second half kept my attention better, and went much faster. I checked this book out from the library and had to renew it at least once. I don’t suggest buying it unless you are deeply interested in the annals of the dark world of plastic. You may want to buy it if you are planning to start an environmental blog and you will need it to refer back to from time to time. I don’t suggest doing that since blogs are a lot of work and it’s difficult to get dedicated readers. Just make it easy for yourself and read my blog.
Jay and Chantal have a Life Without Plastic website that offers great products for your shopping pleasure. The website also has a lot of useful information about plastic and the issues it creates. There is a blog on their website that I don’t suggest reading, for obvious reasons.
