Dear Betty: Reader Email 12/7/18

Hi,
Do I have to rinse out my recycling before I put it in the bin?
Thanks

Thanks for the question!  YES, you do need to rinse out your container before you recycle it.  I used to be sloppy about it and I didn't make sure that I got everything out before I tossed it into the recycling bin but it's important to do this.  When you put things in the recycling that still have food or liquid in them, they can't be recycled.  If your container soils and an entire batch of recyclables, then it all gets thrown out.  The truth is that recycling is easier now than ever.  Most municipal facilities don't even make you sort it.  When I was young and my parents first got recycling bins, there was one for glass, one for metal, and one for paper.  You had to wash everything out and carefully sort it.  You even had to cut the label off of a can of soup!  Try to reduce the amount you recycle by investing in reusable options and when you do have to recycle something, wash it out good.  It only takes a moment of your time and it's worth it to make sure it will actually be recycled.
