Dear Betty: Reader Comment 2/1/2019

Betty,
Zero waste sounds like a good thing to do but I think it's just too expensive for me.  I do enjoy reading the blog though.
Thanks

Dear Reader,
It's a common misconception that this more sustainable lifestyle is expensive.  It has been my experience that it is the opposite of expensive.  My family is about a year into our journey and we are saving more money each month than we ever have.

You are buying fewer products overall and replacing disposable items with reusable items, and that really adds up.  I have a coworker who has said that "just being aware" of what she is purchasing has helped her save money.  You are also eliminating mindless consumerism, impulse purchases, and the tendency to buy another of something you already have. Products are replaced with a better alternative when you run out of something, not all at once.

It takes a little while before you start noticing the savings.  This lifestyle is something that happens over time.

Thanks,
Betty
