If you look under your kitchen sink, in your laundry room, and in your bathroom, you are sure to find a variety of cleaning products.
You probably have some or all of the following: Pledge or dusting spray, Windex or glass cleaner, 409 or other spray for your kitchen counters, a product for tile or laminate floors, a product for hardwood floors, a spot remover for carpet, Scrubbing Bubbles or other bathroom cleaner, Jet dry or other rinse aid for the dishwasher, a toilet bowl cleaner, Goo Gone or something for gunk, and so on and so forth.
Why do we need all of these cleaning products? Why don't we question a simpler way? Why do we take for granted that these products and chemicals are safe to use? Why do we so easily acquiesce to the notions of needing so much to accomplish so little? Is it because society tells us we need an arsenal of chemicals at our disposal? Are we so entranced by commercials that we mindlessly accept the need for these products? Have we been conditioned over time to accept the need for so many things?
There was a simpler time when none of these products existed. How did your grandma or great-grandma clean? She probably had only a few products at her disposal and she knew how to use them to get every cleaning job done, and done well. Grandma probably had baking soda, vinegar, rubbing alcohol, Borax, and bleach at her disposal.
