I talk about silicone and plastic often. It’s important to know the difference. Plastic is a synthetic or man-made material. It is derived from cellulose, coal, natural gas, salt, and crude oil. The result is an unstable material that will off-gas into the air and leach into whatever comes into contact with it. Plastic will never decompose, well maybe after thousands of years. Silicone is derived from Silica. Silica is found is sand, clay, or rock. The silica is heated and it is mixed with some synthetic ingredients to create silicone. In comparison, silicone is much more stable and more natural than plastic. It doesn’t off gas or leach like plastic does. High grade silicone is considered very safe. I personally try to find products that are glass, stainless steel, or bamboo before silicone but I do buy products made of silicon. The problem I have with silicone is that like plastic, it will never decompose. Sometimes there isn’t a better option and in those times we should opt for silicone sparingly. Unless you are getting breast implants. Then you should choose silicone for sure but you can talk to Dr Joseph Gryskiewicz about that.
This blog is my family's journey to living with less. We are exploring a zero waste life and blogging about it along the way. What the Waste?! is a comedic and informative source for how to start being environmentally responsible, informed about the dangers of plastic, and how to make better choices. Follow along with my family to see where to begin and what works. My promise to you is that I'll tell you what you need to know and keep it real along the way. You might just find that less is more!
