I bet you brush yo teefs with a plastic toothbrush. Is it electric? You might be surprised to know that in the United States alone, 850 million toothbrushes are discarded every single year. Every single year. Most go into landfills but many find their way into water systems and then into the ocean. Large birds eat them. You could argue that the birds that eat plastic and starve to death are stupid but who’s the one who is dumping the plastic in the first place? A great solution to a plastic toothbrush is to buy a biodegradable bamboo toothbrush. The cost is comparable and at the end of its life you can toss that bad boy in your magical portal of poop (backyard compost.) Don’t fall for the bamboo toothbrushes from the natural food store that is packaged in plastic! Make sure to get one that comes in a box that can be recycled or composted. I ordered the Go Woo through Amazon and I like it. It feels a little different at first since it isn’t as smooth feeling as plastic but you might just decide you like the feeling of wood in your mouth. Just kidding! Bamboo is technically grass, not wood. But Betty, I need an electric toothbrush! Do you really? Unless you have some sort of oral condition that requires an electric toothbrush, I suggest you give moving your arm back and forth to brush your teeth a try. Buy a 100% biodegradable toothbrush in sustainable packaging and compost it when it is all used up. Do it for the birds. No go on and brush dem sluts.
This blog is my family's journey to living with less. We are exploring a zero waste life and blogging about it along the way. What the Waste?! is a comedic and informative source for how to start being environmentally responsible, informed about the dangers of plastic, and how to make better choices. Follow along with my family to see where to begin and what works. My promise to you is that I'll tell you what you need to know and keep it real along the way. You might just find that less is more!
